Photographs by Vladimir Viatkin at the XIX Pingyao International Photography Festival

On September 2019 the XIX International Pingyao Festival of Photography was held in China. More than 3 millions of people visited exhibitions during festival week this year. I worked as an assistant curator and architect for four shows. All exhibitions were curated by Irina Chmyreva.

First show I would like to talk about is “Four suits of Vladimir Viatkin”. Vladimir is the famous Russian photographer, who is the winner of numerous international awards, has been working for MIA Russia Today News agency for more than 50 years (formerly RIA Novosti, formerly Novosti Press Agency / APN).

In 2019 he became a special guest of the festival. His personal exhibition was at A3 pavilion of Pingyao Diesel factory - one of the festival location. A3 space has about 358 square meters. Curator wanted to separate visually four chapters of the show and asked to create three cubes inside the space. As a result each cube has different size, special position in pavilion and layout of works inside. Cubes make the general visual perception of the space more complicated, that gives an opportunity to organize photographs to be seen differently with particular points of view.
